How to Set Speaker Crossover Frequency in Your AV Receiver (Bass Management Done Right)
If your home-theater bass sounds thin, boomy, or like it's coming from a box in the corner instead of from the movie, the culprit is almost always bass management — the receiver settings that decide which frequencies go to your speakers and which go to the subwoofer. It's controlled by two settings people routinely get wrong: whether each speaker is set to "Large" or "Small," and the crossover frequency. Get them right and everything locks together — tight bass, clean midrange, and a subwoofer you can't point to. This guide explains what the crossover actually does, walks the settings in order, and covers the double-crossover mistake that quietly wrecks a lot of otherwise good systems. Understand what the crossover setting does
Bass management is the receiver's job of deciding which speaker plays which frequencies. The crossover is the dividing line: frequencies above it stay with the speaker, and frequencies below it are redirected to the subwoofer, which is built to reproduce deep bass far better than a small speaker can. This does two good things at once — it protects small speakers from distorting on bass they can't handle, and it frees up your amplifier and speakers to play the midrange and treble cleanly. Getting the crossover right is the single biggest factor in whether your system's bass sounds tight and integrated or thin and boomy.
Bass management: the receiver splits each channel at the crossover frequency, sends the highs to the speaker (set to 'Small') and the lows to the subwoofer, and blends them with the movie's LFE channel. Set to 'Large', a speaker keeps its own bass and the receiver stops redirecting it. - 2
Set every speaker to Small, not Large
In the receiver's speaker configuration menu, each speaker (or pair) can be set to Large or Small. This is the most misunderstood setting in home theater: it has nothing to do with the physical size of the speaker. Large means 'run full-range, send this speaker all its bass and do not redirect anything to the sub.' Small means 'high-pass this speaker at the crossover and send the bass to the subwoofer.' For virtually every home theater with a subwoofer, set ALL speakers to Small — even large floorstanding towers. Redirecting bass to a dedicated, correctly placed subwoofer almost always sounds better and cleaner than making each speaker fight to reproduce deep bass from wherever it happens to sit.

Choose the crossover frequency for each speaker
The THX standard default is 80 Hz, and it is the right starting point for most systems — set every speaker to 80 Hz and you will be close. Then adjust by how low each speaker can actually play: tiny satellite or cube speakers need 120–150 Hz; small bookshelf speakers 80–100 Hz; larger bookshelves 60–80 Hz; full-size towers 40–60 Hz. The rule of thumb is to set the crossover about 10 Hz above the speaker's rated low-frequency limit (its -3 dB point from the spec sheet). Do not set the crossover lower than a speaker can play, or you will leave a hole in the bass where neither the speaker nor the sub is covering those notes. When in doubt, 80 Hz is safe because bass at and below 80 Hz is hard for the ear to localize, so it appears to come from the front speakers rather than the sub.

Set the subwoofer to Yes and choose LFE vs. LFE+Main
Make sure the subwoofer is set to Yes / Present in the speaker menu, or none of the redirected bass has anywhere to go. Then find the subwoofer mode, usually labeled LFE or LFE+Main (some brands call it 'Double Bass'). LFE means the sub plays only the movie's dedicated low-frequency-effects channel plus the bass redirected from your 'Small' speakers — this is what you want in almost every case. LFE+Main additionally sends bass to any speakers set to Large as well as the sub, which only makes sense in specific full-range setups and often causes boomy, doubled-up bass otherwise. Leave it on LFE.

Bypass the subwoofer's own crossover to avoid a double filter
Powered subwoofers have their own crossover knob on the back, and this is a classic trap: if both the receiver AND the sub apply a crossover, you get two filters stacked on top of each other, which rolls off the bass too early and makes it sound weak. Let the receiver do the crossover. On the subwoofer, either set its crossover knob to its maximum (fully clockwise, effectively bypassing it) or, if the sub has an 'LFE' input or a 'crossover bypass' switch, use that input/switch so the sub plays the full signal the receiver sends. Now only one crossover — the receiver's — is doing the work.

Run room correction, then verify what it set
Automatic room correction — Audyssey, YPAO, Dirac Live, MCACC, or Anthem ARC — will measure your speakers and set the sizes and crossovers for you. Run it; it does a good job with levels and distances. But it frequently gets crossovers wrong: it may set a capable speaker to a very low crossover, mark a small speaker as Large, or pick an oddly high number from a noisy measurement. After it finishes, go back into the speaker configuration menu and check every crossover by hand. Confirm all speakers read Small, and raise any crossover that came out below what the speaker can cleanly play (nothing under 80 Hz for typical bookshelves). Room correction sets the starting point; you confirm it.

Test with real content and fine-tune by ear
Play a movie with a strong but clean low-frequency mix and some music with an acoustic bass or kick drum. You are listening for two things: bass that sounds like it comes from the front of the room rather than 'over there' at the sub (if you can point to the sub, the crossover is too high — lower it toward 80 Hz), and a smooth handoff with no hollow dip or exaggerated bump right around the crossover point (if there's a suckout or a boom, nudge the crossover up or down 10 Hz and re-listen). Small changes matter here. Once bass feels attached to the on-screen action and even across the room, bass management is dialed in.
