How to Run Audyssey Room Calibration on a Denon or Marantz AV Receiver (MultEQ Done Right)

If your home theater sounds boomy in some seats and thin in others, or the treble is harsh and dialogue gets lost, the fix usually isn't new gear — it's room calibration. Denon and Marantz receivers ship with Audyssey MultEQ, an automatic system that plays test tones through a supplied microphone, measures how your room actually behaves, and builds correction filters plus speaker distances, levels, and crossovers. Run well, it's the biggest single improvement most rooms can make. Run carelessly — mic in the wrong spot, a noisy room, all the measurements bunched in one seat — it can make things worse. This guide walks the process the way it's meant to be done, and covers the settings Audyssey gets wrong so you can fix them by hand.     Know which Audyssey version you have

    Audyssey ships in three tiers on Denon and Marantz receivers, and the tier sets how much correction you get. MultEQ (entry) applies a coarse correction with relatively few filter points. MultEQ XT (mid-range) adds far more resolution. MultEQ XT32 (upper mid and flagship) has the highest filter resolution and, critically, applies full resolution to the subwoofer channel and supports Sub EQ HT for calibrating two subwoofers independently. Check the front panel or spec sheet so you know what you're working with; the calibration steps are identical across tiers, but XT32 rewards careful measurement the most — and it's the only tier the paid MultEQ-X editor app unlocks. All three are run from the same on-screen 'Audyssey Setup' assistant.

    Prepare the subwoofer and levels before you measure

    Audyssey corrects the response it measures, so give it a good starting point. On the subwoofer, set the crossover knob to maximum (fully clockwise) or use the LFE/bypass input so the receiver — not the sub — owns the crossover; set the phase to 0. Set the sub's gain so it measures around 75 dB: many people start with the sub's volume knob near the 12 o'clock position, run calibration once, and check that Audyssey reports the sub trim landing roughly between -6 and +6 dB — if it maxes out at the limit (often -12 or +12), turn the sub's physical gain knob down or up and re-run. This keeps the sub inside the receiver's adjustment range. Turn off any 'night mode', dynamic bass, or room-correction features built into the subwoofer itself so it isn't fighting the receiver.

    Quiet the room and connect the microphone

    Audyssey plays quiet test chirps and listens for the room's response, so background noise directly corrupts the result. Turn off HVAC, ceiling fans, air purifiers, refrigerators within earshot, and anything that hums; close windows; and don't move around or talk during the sweeps. Plug the Audyssey microphone into the SETUP MIC jack on the front (or rear) of the receiver. Use the actual mic that shipped with your unit — Audyssey mics are individually calibrated at the factory and a mismatched or third-party mic will skew the result.

    Mount the mic at ear height at your main seat

    Put the microphone on a camera tripod or mic stand rather than the flimsy cardboard stand in the box — a stable mount at a repeatable height is the single biggest improvement you can make to the measurement. Position 1 is the reference: place the mic exactly where your head sits in your primary listening seat, at seated ear height (roughly 38 inches / 97 cm from the floor for most couches). Aim the mic straight up at the ceiling — Audyssey mics are designed to be measured pointing vertically, not toward the speakers. Keep the mic clear of your body, the couch back, and any hard surface right next to it.

    The flimsy cardboard stand in the box tips easily and makes it hard to hit a repeatable ear-height position at each spot. A cheap tripod or mic stand holds the mic steady, level, and at the same height every time — the single biggest easy improvement to measurement accuracy. Any tripod with a standard thread works; the Audyssey mic sits on top or clips to the mount. This is the one accessory worth buying — everything else ships with the receiver.

    Run the first measurement (Position 1)

    Start the Audyssey Setup assistant from the receiver's on-screen menu (Setup → Speakers → Audyssey Setup, wording varies slightly by model and year). Follow the prompts; the receiver will first detect which speakers are connected and their polarity, then play a series of sweeps through each speaker and the subwoofer. Leave the room or sit motionless and silent during the sweeps — your body absorbs sound and changes the measurement. If Audyssey flags a speaker as 'out of phase', stop and check that speaker's wiring (positive-to-positive, negative-to-negative) before continuing; occasionally it false-flags dipole surrounds or in-walls, but check the wiring first.

    Measure the remaining positions in the right pattern

    Audyssey averages all the positions you measure, so where you put the mic shapes the correction. Measure the maximum the assistant offers — 8 positions on most current Denon/Marantz, 6 on some — because more positions give the averaging more to work with. Pattern matters more than raw count: cluster the first few points tightly around Position 1 (roughly 1–2 feet left, right, and slightly forward of the main seat, all at ear height), then spread the rest across the other seats you actually use. Don't measure the floor, the ceiling, or a spot no one sits in, and don't bunch all eight into one cushion — that tells Audyssey to optimize a single point and can make every other seat sound worse. Move the mic between each measurement and stay quiet during each sweep.

    Let it calculate and save the result

    After the last position, Audyssey computes the correction filters, speaker distances, channel levels, crossovers, and speaker sizes, then asks you to store the results. Save them. The receiver writes the filters into memory and switches Audyssey on. At this point the system is calibrated — but Audyssey's automatic choices for speaker size and crossover frequency are the part it most often gets wrong, so don't stop here.

    Check and fix the speaker sizes and crossovers

    Go into the manual Speaker Setup menu and review what Audyssey set. Two things to verify. First, speaker size: every speaker should read 'Small' if you have a subwoofer — even towers — so their bass is redirected to the sub. Audyssey sometimes marks a floorstander (or a speaker it measured as playing deep) as 'Large', which stops bass redirection; change it to Small. Second, crossovers: Audyssey frequently picks an oddly low crossover (like 40 Hz) for a speaker that can't cleanly play that low, leaving a hole in the bass. Raise any crossover to about 10 Hz above the speaker's rated low-frequency limit, and default to 80 Hz — the THX standard — for typical bookshelves and towers, higher (100–150 Hz) for small satellites. Audyssey sets the distances and levels well; it's the sizes and crossovers you correct by hand.     Choose your post-calibration settings

    Audyssey isn't just on/off — a few settings decide how it sounds. The Audyssey curve: 'Reference' (the default) applies a gentle high-frequency roll-off and a small midrange dip tuned for movie soundtracks and most rooms — keep this for home theater; 'Flat' removes the roll-off and suits very small or heavily treated rooms and some music listening. Dynamic EQ raises bass and surround level as you turn the volume down so the mix stays full at low levels — genuinely useful for late-night or below-reference listening; try it on, and set the Reference Level Offset to 0 dB for movies (raise it to 10 or 15 dB for compressed/quieter music if the bass feels heavy). Dynamic Volume compresses loud-to-quiet swings (tames loud commercials and explosions) — leave it off for serious movie watching, turn it on for casual or late-night viewing. Toggle Audyssey fully off once and listen to the difference so you know what it's doing.

    Verify with real content — and consider the MultEQ-X app for more control

    Play a familiar movie and some music. You're listening for smooth, even tone with no harshness in the treble, dialogue that sits clearly in the center, and bass that's tight rather than boomy or thin. If something sounds off, re-run calibration — the most common fix is better mic placement and a quieter room, not a different setting. For deeper control, Denon and Marantz XT32 receivers support the paid MultEQ-X app (Windows) or the older MultEQ Editor mobile app, which let you see the measured curves, set custom target curves, and — the popular tweak — limit the correction's upper frequency to around 300–500 Hz so Audyssey fixes the room's bass problems (where it helps most) and leaves the treble alone.
