What Size TV Should You Buy? Screen Size vs. Viewing Distance Explained

The right TV size has almost nothing to do with the size of your room and everything to do with how far your couch sits from the screen. Because 4K resolution lets you sit closer without seeing pixels, the modern advice is simple: buy the biggest screen that still fits your wall and your budget, because almost everyone sits too far away and buys too small. Stop Sizing by the Room. Size by the Angle.

The mistake nearly everyone makes is picking a TV to "look right" on the wall from across the room, standing up, in a bright showroom. Then they get it home, sit down on a couch ten feet back, and it looks small — because a screen that looked huge on a showroom shelf fills a tiny slice of your vision from a real seating distance.

What actually determines whether a TV feels immersive is the viewing angle: how wide a slice of your field of view the picture occupies when you're sitting where you actually watch. A movie screen feels enveloping because it fills most of what you can see. A phone at arm's length shows the same movie but feels like watching through a mail slot. Same content, wildly different experience — and the only thing that changed is how much of your vision the image takes up.

That's why the right question isn't "how big is my room?" It's "how far is my seat, and how much of my view do I want the screen to fill?"


The Two Numbers the Pros Use: 30 and 40 Degrees

Two industry standards define the target, and they're the reason for every "sit this far back" chart you've ever seen:

  • SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends at least a 30-degree viewing angle. This is the relaxed, comfortable end — the screen is clearly the main event but you're not swiveling your head. It's a sensible floor for a mixed-use living room where you also watch news and sports.
  • THX recommends about a 40-degree viewing angle. This is the immersive, movie-theater end — the picture fills enough of your vision that action scenes feel like they surround you. It's the target if home theater is the point of the room.

You don't need a protractor. Those angles convert into a dead-simple relationship between how far you sit and how big the screen should be:

  • For a THX-style 40-degree angle: seating distance ≈ 1.2× the screen diagonal.
  • For a SMPTE 30-degree angle: seating distance ≈ 1.6× the screen diagonal.

So your comfortable range is a seating distance of about 1.2 to 1.6 times the diagonal — closer to 1.2 for immersive, closer to 1.6 for relaxed. Flip it around and it's just as easy: the biggest 4K TV your seat can justify is your seating distance in inches divided by 1.2, and the most relaxed is that distance divided by 1.6.


The Distance-to-Size Cheat Sheet (4K)

Measure from your eyes to the screen wall, in inches (feet × 12), then read off the range. The smaller number in each pair is the relaxed SMPTE size; the larger is the immersive THX size. Aim high — see the next section for why.

  • 6 feet (72 in): 45–60 inch TV. A 55 is the safe pick, a 60–65 if you want it immersive.
  • 7 feet (84 in): 52–70 inch TV. 65 inches is the sweet spot here.
  • 8 feet (96 in): 60–80 inch TV. This is the most common living-room distance, and 65 inches is the default answer; 75 inches is better if the wall allows.
  • 9 feet (108 in): 68–90 inch TV. 75–85 inches.
  • 10 feet (120 in): 75–100 inch TV. 85 inches or a projector.
  • 12 feet (144 in): 90–120 inch. At this distance you're firmly in projector territory for a true theater feel.

If your number lands between two common sizes, round up. The gap between a 65 and a 75 feels huge in the room and trivial on the receipt over the life of the TV.


Why 4K Lets You Sit Closer (So Go Bigger)

Here's the part that changed the old advice. The reason those charts used to tell you to sit far back was resolution: on a 1080p TV, if you sat too close you'd start to see the individual pixels and the picture would look soft and grid-like. So the old rule was a conservative 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal, mostly to hide the pixels.

4K quadruples the pixel count, packing them so tightly that a person with normal 20/20 vision stops being able to resolve individual pixels at roughly 1 to 1.5 times the diagonal. In other words, 4K erased the "you'll see pixels" penalty for sitting close. That's the whole reason you can now fill 40 degrees of your view with a razor-sharp image where a 1080p set would have looked blocky.

The practical takeaway: with a modern 4K TV, the thing limiting how big you go isn't resolution anymore — it's your wall, your budget, and how immersive you want it. Almost nobody sits close enough to "run out" of 4K detail on a normal living-room screen. This is also why 8K is a solution in search of a room: to actually resolve 8K's extra pixels you'd have to sit closer than about 0.7 times the diagonal, which for an 85-inch screen means putting your face about four feet away. Nobody watches like that, so 8K's resolution advantage is invisible at any sane distance. Buy a great 4K set, not a mediocre 8K one.

Don't Forget Height: The Vertical Rule

Viewing angle is mostly a horizontal calculation, but mounting height quietly wrecks a lot of setups. The ideal is for your eye line to hit roughly the center-to-lower-third of the screen when you're seated. Mount a big TV up over a fireplace and you'll spend every movie tilting your head back — uncomfortable within twenty minutes, and it also drags OLED and LCD panels off their best viewing angle, washing out contrast and color.

If a high mount is unavoidable, tilt the screen down toward the seats, or better, plan the layout so the screen center lands near seated eye level (usually 40 to 48 inches off the floor to the center of the panel). Get the height wrong and the perfect size won't save the experience.


Bright Room, Wide Room, More Than One Row

The angle math assumes one main seat. Real rooms are messier:

  • Wide couch / multiple seats: size for the closest main seat so nobody is overwhelmed, but lean toward the bigger end so the end seats still get a decent angle.   • Two rows: size for a comfortable angle at the front row; the back row will get a smaller angle and that's fine.
  • Bright room: brightness, not size, is the thing to prioritize — a big dim TV in a sunny room looks worse than a right-sized bright one. That's a panel-and-nits decision, not a size decision.

When a Projector Beats Any TV

There's a ceiling to TVs. Once your ideal size pushes past about 85 inches — which happens fast at 10-plus feet of seating distance — TVs get expensive and heavy in a hurry, and the truly giant sizes carry a steep premium. A projector flips the economics: a 100-, 120-, or even 150-inch image can cost less than a top-tier 85-inch TV, and nothing else delivers that theater-scale viewing angle.

The tradeoff is light. Projectors need control over ambient light to look their best, so they shine in dedicated or dimmable rooms and struggle in bright ones. Put It Together

  1. Measure your real seating distance in inches (feet × 12).
  2. Divide by 1.6 for the relaxed size, by 1.2 for the immersive size — that's your range.
  3. Round up to the next common size, and lean toward the immersive end since 4K removes the old "too close" penalty.
  4. Check the height so seated eye line hits the middle of the screen.
  5. If your ideal size is 90 inches or more, price a projector before a giant TV.
